Fort Benning
is a military base facility of the United States military southwest of
Columbus, Georgia. The base is located in Muscogee County, Chattahoochee
County and Russell County. It is named for Confederate General Henry L.
Benning, a native of Columbus. Established in 1918, the base covers
182,000 acres (737 kmē). acres 182,000 acres(app:300

IMPORTANT:
Fort Benning's military police aggressively
enforces its on-post speed limits. The speed limit during PT hours
(0600-0730) is 15 MPHs - NO EXCEPTIONS. So please, slow down and
drive carefully.

Benning is both an integral community into itself and a part of a larger
community that includes Columbus, Georgia; Phenix City, Alabama; and the
Chattahoochee Valley. It is a two-hour drive from Atlanta, via Interstate
185. The Fort Benning military community can also be reached on Interstate
85 south, to Interstate 185 south, this route will lead you directly into
the installation. You may then travel (right) on 1st Division Rd. to Dixie
Rd. You will then find the Installation Welcome Center (Bldg 2622), where
all military permanent party personnel are required to sign-in. The

Guest House offers 1100 attractive, affordable rooms for you and your
family. Each accommodations offers useful amenities you will not
find at most other lodging facilities in the area such as Security card
system and Handicap suites.
Prices range from
$28 to $60 per night and may accommodate from 4 to 6 guests. Reservations
can be made 3 days prior to your stay based upon space availability. Those
with PCS orders have priority and may make advance reservations. Check in
time is 2 p.m. and not later than 6 p.m. After 6 p.m., rooms are available
on a first come basis. Reservations can be made over the phone or at Olsen
Hall (Bldg 399). Reservations must be made with a credit card.

cantonment areas on Ft. Benning. They are the Main Post area,
Kelley Hill, Sand Hill and Harmony Church. Main Post houses various
garrison and smaller FORSCOM units of Ft. Benning such as 36th Engineer
Group, 988th MP Co., and 29th Infantry Regiment (training support) and
misc. TRADOC-related functions, i.e. OCS and airborne school, for
instance.
Kelley Hill houses the 3rd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division
(Mechanized). Sand Hill is the primary location of the Infantry Training
Brigade and Basic Combat Training Brigade, while the Harmony Church houses
the Sniper and Ranger schools. The Officer Candidate School (OCS) of
the United States Army is a school located at Fort Benning and provides
training for would-be commissioned officers.
Fryar Drop Zone, the drop zone that airborne students land into, is
actually in the Alabama portion of Fort Benning.Home &

the ITB conducts fourteen weeks of one station unit training (OSUT)

Training (OSUT). During the new Infantryman's initial entry training, it
is not possible to teach him all of the skills considered critical and

1918: Camp Benning opens as the Infantry School of Arms.
1942: 507th Parachute Infantry activated at Fort Benning.
1974: Gen. Creighton Abrams, Army chief of staff, orders creation
of a Ranger battalion.
1984: The School of the Americas is transferred to Fort Benning
from Panama.
1989: Rangers from Fort Benning parachute into Panama to lead the
invasion that restored democracy there.
1993: Six Rangers killed in fighting with Somali warlords in a
humanitarian mission to the starving country.

Fort Benning is known as the Home
of the Infantry. Since 1918, it has been home to the Army's training
programs for infantry tactics. Fort Bragg was originally supposed to get
the Infantry School, but ended up with artillery instead.
In 1963, the 11th Air Assault
Division was formed at Fort Benning to test battlefield uses of
helicopters. The tests led to the airmobile concept of the 1st Cavalry
Division.
Fort Benning is the home of
parachute training. The paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division learned
their trade there.
The School of the Americas has
been under fire from Congress in recent years for alleged human rights
abuses by its graduates. Last year, the U.S. House came within seven votes
of cutting off its funding.
The Columbus Metropolitan Airport,
approximately 15 miles from Ft. Benning, is served by Atlantic Southeast
Airline (ASA), American Eagle, and Northwest Air Link.
Ft Benning's geography and climate are
ideal not only for year-round military training but also for most outdoor
activities.
There is a large commissary, a large main
exchange and a variety of branch stores.
